The Orioles have placed 25-year old righty reliever/starter David Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle. Hernandez has pitched in 33 games (8 starts) for the Orioles this year and he is 5-8 with 2 saves, a 4.52 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. He has been much better since moved to the bullpen. In 25 games in relief this season, Hernandez is 4-3 with 2 saves, a 3.29 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Hernandez has whiffed 33 batters and walked only 9 in 27 1/3 innings in relief for the O’s this year. Relieving suits his stuff better than starting as he can just let er’ rip in the pen attacking with a high 90’s fastball.

The Baltimore Orioles were smart to hold onto Luke Scott

Rumors were flying last weekend that teams were inquiring about 1B/OF Luke Scott. The Orioles didn’t get any legit offers so they kept him and it was a smart thing to do. Scott has played in 81 games for the Orioles this year and he is 80 of 281 (.285 avg, .920 OPS) with 45 runs scored, 19 homers and 45 RBIs. Scott has a good shot to set new career highs in runs scored (67), homers (25) and RBIs (77) if he can just stay healthy the rest of the year. The bottom line is the Orioles were smart to keep Scott who has the most pure power on the Orioles without a doubt.
