The Baltimore Orioles might be busy at the Winter Meetings
The Orioles have some money to spend in free agency so they might be busy next week. It would be better for them to sign a free agent to fill the holes on the team rather than trading prospects. There could be bargains in the corner infield which is a need for the Orioles. Right now the starters at 1B and 3B would be Michael Aubrey and Ty Wigginton if the season started today and that’s just not good enough. If the Orioles are looking at a 1B in free agency, Carlos Delgado, Russell Branyan or Hank Blalock would probably be in their price range. If 3B is the area the Orioles are trying to add than Miguel Tejada, Pedro Feliz, Joe Crede or Troy Glaus make sense. It’s possible that the Orioles try to add to both positions this winter with Wigginton and Aubrey coming off the bench. The Orioles need some bullpen help for late in games but they will probably be looking at second tier guys like Kevin Gregg, J.J. Putz and Octavio Dotel. Any of those three guys could eventually close for the Orioles. I see the Orioles looking for quantity over quality as they likely won’t pony up the cash for the top free agents. But if they were to get one player in each position mentioned above they will have a chance to approach a .500 record if the young and talented players come through in 2010.
